He joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh medical center as director of the minimally invasive spine program. He launched and directed UPMC’s complex spine fellowship in 2012, was appointed chief of spine services in 2014, and performed more than 6,000 spine surgeries as he climbed the ranks to tenured Professor of neurological surgery. He is actively obtaining his executive MBA from UCLA following which he will assume the executive directorship of the Hoag Neurosciences Institute. This move has enlivened Dr. Kanter’s fervor to partake in transformational change with a health system not only capable, but eager to lead by best practice, not just best business. It has additionally enabled him to enjoy a coastal lifestyle where he and his wife, Jodi, of 24 years live with the youngest three of their five children: Jared, Kamryn, Jeremy, Aliyah & Kyli, and their trusty yellow lab, Miley. They all now enjoy hiking southern California trails, bodysurfing, beach volleyball and oceanside s’mores roasts! SEMBRANO, MD Originally from the Philippines, Dr. Jonathan Sembrano is currently an Associate Professor in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where he has held a faculty appointment since 2008. From the outset of his career, he had been very interested in both minimally-invasive spine surgery and spinal deformity correction surgery– two seemingly divergent schools in spine surgery. Through the years he had strived (and struggled) to come up with the least invasive strategies for his patients that would nonetheless adhere to the latest principles in optimizing spinal alignment. He had devoted research efforts and published on these topics, with special interest in lateral lumbar interbody fusion. He had been actively involved in the Society of Lateral Access Surgeons (SOLAS) and the Society of Minimally- Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS), but also the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), as well as a regular attendee at the International Spine Deformity Symposium (ISDS). He looks forward to continuing, together with the rest of the spine community, in the quest to improve our understanding of optimal spinal alignment, while at the same time recognizing the importance of keeping the morbidity of surgical procedures to as minimal as possible. He currently also serves as President of the Philippine-Minnesotan Medical Association. When not working as a spine surgeon, he loves spending time with his family—wife Sharon, daughter Stefanie (4) and son Peterson (4 mos). He tries to keep in shape by playing tennis and basketball. Although he has not been able to read as much as he would like to, he has discovered the joys of listening to audiobooks and podcasts, among which ‘Revisionist History’ and ‘Cautionary Tales’ are his favorites. After going through a couple years of pandemic lockdown, he was so thrilled to have spent summer 2022 watching live concerts, including of his favorite band Belle and Sebastian, Barenaked Ladies, and Minnesota Orchestra’s performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
