Target Audience
This course is designed for orthopaedic and neurological surgeons, fellows, and residents.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
The underlying need is to provide a forum in which spinal surgeons can receive updates on, and discuss, current research results, outcomes studies, and new surgical techniques and technologies, in a manner that is concise, focused, expert and free from bias. This activity is designed to elucidate the bone graft landscape through consideration of evidence, regulatory pathways, product variability & cost, and safety concerns. The activity includes immediate real-world applications and tips for the attendees to integrate into their case management and surgical planning. Each session will start with a review of current research and will conclude with a discussion between faculty.
Educational Objectives
- Discuss the level and quality of evidence for the different types of bone graft
- Elucidate the bone graft landscape through consideration of key factors such as the level of evidence, regulatory pathway, product variability, cost, and important safety concerns
- Describe risk factors associated with spinal fusion that can best be managed in a pre-operative setting to optimize post-operative outcomes, including osteoporosis, smoking, diabetes, and obesity
- Discuss the imaging modalities used to assess lumbar fusions and the pros and cons of each modality
- Discuss a proposed algorithm for spinal fusion assessment
